Good Egg Productions announces Matt and Ben, by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers, coming to Actors’ Theatre in March, 2026

Good Egg Productions is producing the play Matt and Ben written by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers. This two-person play, starring Sarah Mitchler and Sarah K. Michael, is a fictionalized comedic account of the creation of the script for Good Will Hunting by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Matt and Ben will be performed at Actors’ Theatre in downtown Santa Cruz from March 13th to March 22nd, 2026. 

Matt and Ben is the untrue and hilarious account of how young up-and-coming actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote the script for their cinematic masterpiece Good Will Hunting. Whether or not Matt and Ben can get their act together and get on the same page to kick off twenty years of celebrity culture is (almost) entirely up to them. Written to be performed by two women, Santa Cruz’s own talents Sarah K. Michael (Cabrillo Stage) will be playing Ben Affleck, and Sarah Mitchler (Mountain Community Theater) will be playing Matt Damon.

Good Egg Productions was founded in 2025 with the mission to put on modern works with the goal of keeping in conversation with theater that speaks to contemporary audiences. With a script by comedic multihyphenate Mindy Kaling (The Office, etc), and established playwright Brenda Withers, Matt and Ben provides a fantastic first outing for a new company looking to engage Santa Cruz audiences.

“Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers wrote an exceptionally funny script that connects us with, humanizes, and lampoons these two figures of contemporary culture.” says Ian Dyer, the director. “We are incredibly excited for audiences in Santa Cruz to laugh at Matt and Ben.”
